Group of volunteers lined up alongside a canal.

Last Thursday 29th July, we met Amy, Libby and Simon from Buckingham Canal Trust to help clear the canal at Burleigh Piece. Luckily, we had lovely weather.

We performed a variety of tasks including clearing the reeds from the canal bank and trimming the hedges. Iain managed to be stung twice after disturbing a wasp’s nest in the hedgerow. Tom’s waders sprung a leak which resulted in one wet leg and sock. It was a great experience both offices joining together to volunteer for this project.

We feel we helped the wildlife have accessible open water to nest and swim in. We also discovered two goldfish in the canal, not sure they are a native species in English waterways! The walkers and runners now have a clear path free of stinging nettles and overhanging thorns. Thanks to Tom Thornewill, Marcia Whitehead, Debra Tame, Iain MacSween, Ruth McKeown, Charlie Reynolds and Alex Chapman. Also thanks to Ella for looking after Dougal the dog.

We are looking forward to next year to help keep this waterway accessible to all.
