Hallam Land employees outside a school, showing students how land promoters work.

In June, Hallam Land’s South Midlands team took part in a Connected Learning Project with 300 Year 9 students at Shenley Brook End School in Milton Keynes. The team delivered a week long project, with David Lock Associates, exploring careers in the Built Environment and planning the next potential phase of Milton Keynes.

Through working with the students in small groups, they were able to develop their ideas for how a greenfield site near their school could be planned to provide both homes and employment opportunities. The environment was a significant theme across all groups, with students developing a wide range of innovative ways in which they wanted to see the next part of Milton Keynes designed. The students sketched out their proposals, created mood boards of buildings and places they liked and used this material to make presentations of their ideas. An overall winning group was announced at the end of the week, following judging by representatives of the school’s Governors, The Milton Keynes Parks Trust, DLA and Hallam Land.

There was a huge sense of achievement by the students and their enthusiasm was great to see. The feedback from the students and teachers was equally positive, leading to us being invited back to the school next year.

Our thanks go to David Lock Associates and Shenley Brook End School for working with us to deliver this project.
